Ruth Carter Sergent Green

Ruth Carter Sergent Green, age 103, died peacefully Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at her residence on Deerview Drive.

A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Paul Bauer officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until service time at the church. Burial will be held at a later date in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, Virginia.

Born March 21, 1915 in Gate City, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late David A. Sergent and the late Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Carter Sergent. She spent her childhood, high school, college years, and married in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia. In 1935, she married John Dixon Green, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1956. Mrs. Green worked for Parks Belk in Bristol, Virginia, for 40 years and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church there, and a dedicated member of the Pilot Club until retirement. Upon moving to Columbia, Tennessee in 1998 to be with her family, she joined the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her son, John Dixon "Dick" Green, Jr. of Columbia; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren: Susan (Dan) Garman and daughters, Ashton Caroline Garman, Andrea (Patrick) O'Donnell and Annika (Dave) Benedict; John Dixon "Jay" (Beverley) Green, III and children, Mary Kelsey Green and John Carter (Paige) Green; William Sergent "Will" (Penny) Green and daughters, Meagan Elisabeth Green, Hannah Marie Green, and Katherine Anne Green.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son David Robert Green on March 19, 2010; brother, Dave A. Sergent, Jr.; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Babs McLellan Green on November 30, 2006.
